What Do You Do When A Car Accident Is Caused by Criminal?

A fatal Milton, WA car accident this week was caused by a person running from the police in a hot pursuit.  The female driver was driving drunk and fled police when they tried to pull her over.  She was driving at high speed when she slammed in another car killing Doug Simmons III of Oregon City, Oregon and seriously injuring passenger Holly Mattson also of Oregon City, OR.  Our prayers go out to Mr. Simmons family.

Police have come under fire for engaging in the hot pursuit.  Police generally pursue a vehicle if it is being driven recklessly or the driver is suspected of DUI.  In this case there were reports of both on the fleeing driver.

The at-fault driver has a long history of criminal wrong doing.  Back in 2002 she tried to sell her one year-old baby boy for $2,000.  Charges were filed and she agreed to probation.  She also has a long criminal history involving assault, malicious mischief, numerous drug charges, and domestic violence.

If you are in a serious injury car accident in Washington with someone like this what do you do?  What does your family do?  You can bet a driver like this doesn't have car insurance, so you're going to be left holding the bag.  What can you do to protect yourself and your family?

Start by purchasing as much unisured motorist coverage as you can on your car insurance. It doesn't cost much at all but can make all the difference.  We recommend 500,000 or better yet 1,000,000 in coverage.  You can rack up six figure medical bills in a case like this one.  The spouse and children of Mr. Simmons have suffered a catastrophic loss both emotionally and financially.  The lose of a wage earner in the prime of his life for a family can have negative effects for generations.

When a loved one is killed in a fatal Washington car accident the family is left to pick up the pieces.  That burden can be made easier if there is a high policy limit insurance policy available to attempt to help make up for the financial devastation that follows the wrongful death of a husband and father.  Nothing can replace a lost spouse and parent, but the family can be saved for total financial ruin by having good insurance coverage in place for the worst case scenario.

Maintaining good health insurance coverage, buying life insurance and disability insurance are also good precautions to put in place.  No one likes to think about death, but dealing with a little discomfort now can save your family so much more should God forbid something unthinkable happen to you.
