A 20 year old Silverdale, Washington man severed his leg in a Washington motorcycle accident last weekend.  The man was riding a 2009 Yamaha YZF-R6 too fast.  The Washington bike rider attempted to take a left turn at too high of speed on westbound Highway 112 eighteen miles from Port Angeles.

The rider was not able to make the left turn and skidded off the highway, flew over a ditch and jumped over Lyre River Road.  During the motorcycle accident the man's right leg hit a stop sign and was severed below the knee.  He and the bike continued to fly and hit several trees before coming to a stop.  The man was in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center following the accident.

There were a little over 80 deaths last year from Washington motorcycle accidents.  Nearly half of those were a result of single vehicle accidents.  Additionally, half of the deaths involved excessive speed.  Put the two together and you get a recipe for disaster.  This young man is lucky to have survived the accident. 

Sport bikes are a blast to ride fast.  But there is a time and place to do it.  On the open highway is not one of them.  If you want to go fast and test your limits please do it at a race track.  Tracks open up to the public from time to time, check with your local bike shop or motorcycle rider club for the track nearest you.
