Almost 20% of Washington Drivers Have No Insurance l Kirkland Car Accident Attorney

A recent study by the Insurance Research Council detailed how many people in the U.S. drive without car insurance. The ranked each state from high to low based on the percentage of uninsured driver. Washington came in at No. 10 with nearly 20%. Scary!!

The national average was about 14% of drivers without auto insurance, which breaks down to about 1 in 7 drivers. In Washington it's about 1 in 5 drivers without auto insurance.

The bad ecomony is partially to blame according to the study. Until the economy recovers we can expect these numbers to continue.

What can you do to protect yourself?

Call your insurance agent and buy as much uninsured motorist (UM) coverage as you can afford. You'll be surprised that it does not cost a lot to include or raise this coverage on your auto policy.

I recommend that you have at least $500,000 in UM insurance, or better yet $1,000,000.

This may seem like a lot, but what if you were never able to work again because of accident related injuries?Doesn't seem like a lot when think about in terms like that does it.

What happens if you don't do this? If you're seriously injured in a Washington car accident by another vehicle that does not have any insurance you will be left holding the bag. You will have to pay for all your medical bills and no one will pay you for the days you miss from work.

Sure you can sue the driver, but in reality if the driver didn't have enough money to buy car insurance then the driver is unlikely to have any assets either. Plus, you'll find it extremely difficult to find a lawyer to hire because the risk of not recovering any funds is too great for a lawyer to get involved.
